Grateful for support: Charlie McIlwee

In our latest in a series of Q&As with staff members, Charlie McIlwee explains why he enjoys working for GTS Solutions so much.

Name: Charlie McIlwee.

Age: 63.

Job: Security guard, Fife.

Tell us a little about yourself? Did you attend high school & College?

When I was younger, I attended a special needs school as I couldn’t read or write. I spent a number of years there and left when I was 16 without any real qualifications.

Did you have any problem with barriers to education or getting into work before joining GTS.

Being dyslexic has its challenges but I have managed to adapt as best as I can and cope with things throughout my working life. I have been a working man all my life so I have tried not to let my dyslexia hold me back.

How did you hear about GTS Solutions?

My nephew was visiting me last year and mentioned there was a short-term security job going and that’s when I first met the guys. Turns out it was a really good decision as things have developed from there into my job just now.

What made you apply for a job with the company?

I got a phone call from Tracey (Operations Director) asking if I’d like to meet her and Chris (Chief Executive) as another opportunity had opened up in Fife. We spent some time talking about the job and I couldn’t have hoped to meet two nicer people to work with. I’m based in Fife now but also worked at the lights display at Edinburgh Castle last year which was a great experience. The GTS guys on that job were a great bunch of boys so that was a big help, too.

What is the best thing about your role?

My other half says the best thing about it is the peace and quiet she gets when I am at work! Seriously, though, I just enjoy going out and doing the job well that I’m paid to do. In my previous job I was standing for hours on end making cardboard cartons for packaging for a drinks company which was tough physically. They were long days which were taking a toll on my body. Now, though, I’m not in pain when I get back from work and the family have noticed a big difference in me.

What is the toughest part?

My boss on site has high standards so I’m always trying hard to meet them and make sure he’s not disappointed.

If it wasn’t for GTS Solutions, what do you think you would be doing?

If it wasn’t for Tracey, I’d still be stuck in the job I was doing, which wouldn’t have been great as I found it quite tough going at times.

What is your ambition?

I just want to keep working as long as I can to help repay the faith that Tracey and Chris have shown in me.

Where would you like to be in 5/10 years’ time?

I might be retired – but then again maybe not! As long I’m still fit and healthy I’d like to think I’d still be doing something.

Would you recommend GTS Solutions’ training programmes?

I was put through the SIA training course by the company which was a huge help. I really enjoyed the course and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to others who might be thinking about getting their badge. Working for GTS has really given me a boost and I’m sure it would do the same for others.
